The council is the place where joint decisions are made in school, and it is therefore important that it include the best representatives — both boys and girls. School classrooms generally have an almost equal number of male and female students. Our proposal is that the same should be true of the council. When there is a 5050 balance of students, it gives representation to everyone and leads to better decisions being made.
* We initiated a call to parents and communities to establish 5050 student councils in schools.
* We asked schools that already have 5050 councils to register in our leading-by-example database.
Impact
- To date, dozens of schools have reported establishing 5050 student councils. In schools where the 5050 model has been implemented over time:
* The demand for 5050 becomes the default: balance is perceived as the proper standard.
* Education for equality.
* Embedding equality in decision-making from a young age.
* Sensitivity to gender diversity develops in additional arenas within the school as well.
* When the staff recognizes the significance for students, they adopt the principle in additional areas too.
